moxie soda pop in a glass bottle

In Lowell, Maine 1885 a civil war veteran and homeopathic physician named Dr. Augustine Thompson of the Moxie Nerve Food Company set out to create a cure-all elixir that didn’t contain the harmful ingredients that many medicines of that day relied on. While there is much folklore surrounding the invention of this famous drink, Moxie’s success and distinctive flavor are derived from its secret ingredient; Gentian Root. Those who were first to try Moxie were impressed by the elixir’s “health and vigor” theme and the drink became a wide success along the east coast where it is still enjoyed and celebrated today. In 2005, the Moxie’s home state of Maine made the soda it’s state beverage and holds annual Moxie Festivals.
